Tashua Elementary School PTA Minutes October 25, 2012

Meeting called to order: 7:02 PM

The PTA welcomed special presenter Jessica Sage-Rosenblatt (from the Trumbull TAG program) who gave us a 45 minute presentation of the writings of Edward M. Hallowell and his book, “The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness.”
No new business was presented.

3rd Vice President’s Report – Charlotte Janis
- Things are going great so far this school year. The kids have all settled into their classes.
- The next big event is the Tashua Mashua on Friday, October 26, 2012. The Halloween parade will be on
Wednesday, October 31, 2012.
- November picture retake day is Friday, November 9, 2012.
- Conferences will be coming up. Please prepare ahead with any questions or issues you may have for
your child’s teacher.
- The School Climate Committee (a committee developed to help keep kids connected with one another as
well as with teachers in the building) has met and come up with some good ideas to help improve
relations between students.
- Every class has a buddy to partner up with.
- The teachers are working to learn all the students in their grade level and not just their classroom.
- A school acronym (TIGER) is being developed.
- There will be a Mix-It-Up day in school (more information to follow)
- Mrs. Neumeyer and the reading teachers will be having math/literacy workshops to help teach parents
how their children are learning. The dates right now are November 19 and 20.
President’s Report – Judy FitzGibbons
- The School directory will be coming out next week.
- Fundraising is going great. To date we have raised over $10,000 to fund PTA programs for this school
year.
- Thanks goes out to the Fall Fling Committee as well as the Academic Excellence Committee for all of
their hard work.
- Academic Excellence has sent out emails to establish book clubs for each grade level, as well as 5th grade Knowledge Master’s program, and a newly formed drama club.
- After School Enrichment (ASE) will have another 6-8 week session in the winter (sometime in January).
- Yearbooks are being offered. New options are available to anyone interested. Love lines will be going
out as well.
- The fifth grade picture has been taken for the yearbook.
- This week is Red Ribbon Week. Please wear red on Friday, October 26 in celebration of a drug free
lifestyle.
- The Community Service Committee will be sponsoring a Halloween Parade at Spring Meadows on
Friday, October 26 at 4:30. Please meet at Spring Meadows.
- This year instead of Blocks of Love we will be raising money for kids with cancer at a Block Party. The
date is November 10, 2012. Please contact Karli Smith with any questions.
- The Basket Brigade is November 17, 2012
Treasurers’s Report – Holly Flores
- Any receipts for the teacher’s supply closet need to be turned in.
- Fifth Grade Activities has done a great job raising money so far this year.
- Holiday Boutiques receipts should be turned in as well.
- We were very fortunate to receive a $5000 grant from the Sievert Foundation. The money may be used
for whatever the school deems necessary.
Last minute items
- Fifth grade will be having a bake sale on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 (Election Day). Any volunteers to help out and bake goods are appreciated.
- There is no date yet for Sensitivity Day.
- TPSLD will have a coffee and chat on November 7, 2012.
